Birth Companion Project

A doula is a trained, non-medical support person who provides emotional, physical, informational and advocacy to a pregnant mother during the pregnancy, labor and postpartum period.  Continuous labor support by doulas have been proven to reduce cesarean sections, increase breastfeeding rates and better birthing outcomes.  Our Birth Companions (Doulas) are trained to provide detailed information about the pregnancy, labor process, and breastfeeding.

Our program serves mothers who: 1. Live in Opelousas or Lafayette 2. Delivering at Opelousas General, Lafayette General, or Women's Hospital 3. Take part in WIC, SNAP, and Medicaid 4. Are in their 1st or 2nd trimester of pregnancy
